This October, Shanghai East International Medical Center is proud to participate in National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Facts about Breast Cancer
Breast cancer is the second most common kind of cancer in women.
  • Nearly 1.7 million new breast cancer cases were diagnosed in 2012.
  • Breast cancer is the second most common cancer in women and men worldwide. In 2012, it represented about 12 percent of all new cancer cases and 25 percent of all cancers in women.
  • Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer among women in 140 of 184 countries worldwide.
  • Globally, breast cancer now represents one in four of all cancers in women. 
  • Since 2008, worldwide breast cancer incidence has increased by more than 20 percent. Mortality has increased by 14 percent.
  • The good news is that many women can survive breast cancer if it is found and treated early.
If you are a woman between the ages of 40-49 years old, talk with your doctor about when to start getting mammograms and how often to get them.
If you are a women between the ages of 50-74 years old, be sure to get a mammogram every 2 years or as needed.
It is important to talk to doctor about the risk for breast cancer, especially if a close family member of yours has had breast or ovarian cancer. Your doctor can help you deicide when and how often to get mammograms.

At SEIMC, we offer several specialized packages for women focusing on gynecological health and well being.

It is good to know what to do if someone is sick or injured, especially in an emergency situation. After learning first aid skill and practice, it easier to stay calm in an emergency situation. Shanghai American School Girl Scout Troop Visited SEIMC in September to learn about first aid and emergency procedures.
 

What can we do to prepare for an emergency in Shanghai?
In an emergency, call 120 for ambulatory assistance. Also call the hospital while you’re on your way so that they can properly prepare for your arrival.
 
Take CPR and First Aid Courses and offer these trainings to your drivers or housekeepers as a precaution.
 
Make an Emergency Action Plan and share it with your family and emergency contacts.
 
Prepare an emergency supply kit with basic medical supplies, hospital phone numbers, copies of passports and insurance cards, and other vital materials.
 
Get health insurance and make sure you understand your coverage but remember that most hospitals will not be able to offer direct billing outside of office hours.
