Sunlight, Vitamin D, and Health |

Vitamin D is an essential HORMONE, made in the skin under strong sunlight. Hormones have powerful effects, so it's not surprising that vitamin D deficiency can cause some of our most important bodily systems to malfunction and cause disease.

There is strong evidence linking vitamin D with protection from infections, heart disease, cancers, diabetes, multiple sclerosis and depression. Researchers have recently added Alzeimer's and Parkinson's disease to an ever-growing list. |

Symptoms such as fatigue or aches and pains may be suggestive of vitamin D deficiency.

Vitamin D deficiency is very common, especially in the winter months.

Foods generally are not a good source of vitamin D, so getting adequate sunlight is essential to health. |

Deficiency is strongly associated with darker skin colour, as you then have to spend more time in the sun to make vitamin D.

Early morning and late afternoon sun is too weak for vitamin D production. Ultraviolet B rays are blocked by sunscreens, air pollution and clothing, so you need some unprotected exposure when the sun is high in the sky. About a quarter of your estimated "burning time" is said to be enough. The more skin you expose, the more vitamin D you make.
