Dr. Bingguan Chen (China)
General Surgeon

Dr. Chen joins Shanghai East International Medical Center as a staff general surgeon. Dr. Chen received his medical doctor and surgeon training in Shanghai, China in 1988. He then received a second degree in medicine along with Board Certification in surgical oncology from Okayama University, Japan. From 1996 to 2000 Dr. Chen received post doctoral training in immunology from the University of Michigan, USA. Before returning to Shanghai to join the SEIMC team Dr. Chen was a faculty affiliated with Yale University and Boston University in the New England, USA.

Dr. Chen provides SEIMC with a general surgery specialty service on a full time basis. His strong background in hematology and immunology will also increase the care and services of SEIMC.

Dr. Chen speaks fluent English, Japanese and Mandarin.

Dr. Charu Palta (India)
Pediatrician

Dr. Palta is a recent addition to the medical staff of Shanghai East International Medical Center. She is a 1996 graduate of Stanley Medical College in Chennai, India. She went on to complete a Junior and Senior Residency at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital of New Delhi in 2003.

Dr. Palta passed her National Board Examination in Pediatrics in 2002 and went on to certification in both pediatrics and neonatology. Between 2003 & 2004 she established and managed a pediatric – neonatology clinic in Pune India providing both primary and secondary care in her specialties.

Following 2 years in Thailand Dr Palta has arrived in Shanghai with her husband and 2 children.

Dr. Isabel Gascon (Spain)

Dr. Donald Greig (Scotland)

Dr. Greig graduated from the University of Aberdeen Medical School in 1982. He completed a 3 year surgical training in Glasgow before embarking on his MD research thesis in Edinburgh. In 1995 he was appointed as a Consultant General Surgeon in an Edinburgh Teaching Hospital. In 1998 Dr. Greig moved permanently to Hong Kong to practice as a General surgeon. He currently holds the posts of Specialist in General Surgery, Member of Medical ethics Committee as well as member of OT Risk Management Committee. Dr. Greig's special interests include laparoscopic and hernia surgery, colon cancer screening, breast care, treatment of varicose veins, male family planning.

Dr. Dan Hooley (Australia)

Orthopedic Specialist

Dr. Hooley graduated from the University of Sydney. After holding a number of surgical posts, he began his orthopedic training in 1978 as a registrar in both Sydney and Edinburgh. He entered private practice in 1986 and moved to Hong Kong in 1994 as the orthopedic partner at Drs. Anderson and Partners. Dr. Hooley has a particular interest in sports medicine, and his specialty is arthroscopic investigation and surgery of the joints. In addition to general orthopedic surgery, Dr. Hooley also performs various types of joint replacements, including Birmingham Hip Resurfacing, and treats hand and foot problems such as Dupuytren's Contracture, bunions and other deformities.

Dr. Sigrid Brede (Germany)
Anesthesiology & Pain Management

Dr. Brede joined the team of Shanghai East International Medical Center specialty physicians in May 2007 in the area of Anesthesiology. She comes to Shanghai with a combined medical training and clinical experience record of over 30 years.

Dr. Brede was born in in Cologne, Germany. Her preclinical studies occurred in the Republic of South Africa and medical school was completed at the University College Galway, Ireland in 1978.

Dr. Brede has anesthesia experience in large Eurpean hospitals in areas abdominal, thoracic, vascular, orthopaedic, neurological, urologic, obstetrics and gynecology, ENT, ophthalmology, pediatric and transplantation surgery. She is licensed to practice medicine in Ireland, Great Britain and Germany.

Dr. Brede has also developed a private practiced in the area of pain management giving consultation in a wide range of problems and conditions related this emerging specialty.

As Dr. Brede works almost exclusively in the confines of the operating theatre you may rarely see her as “your physician”, but you can rest assured that her knowledge and experience will be diligently at work while you receive surgical services in SEIMC

Dr. Sarah Zhu (China)
Anesthetist, Operating Theater Manager

Dr. Sarah Zhu manages all aspects of our two state-of-the-art operating theaters. She has worked in Surgical, ICU and Emergency Medicine for twenty years as an anesthesiologist. Both a Registered Nurse and Medical Doctor, Sarah brings a very high level of expertise to the Operating Room ensuring a safe, effective and efficient surgical experience for our patients.

Her extensive knowledge has been accredited with several articles published in National Medical Journals. Sarah is married with a daughter.
