As Shanghai's first foreign joint-venture hospital, our medical center has been a leader in expatriate healthcare since day one, and continues to set the pace for facilities that follow. Some of our notable accomplishments among foreign hospitals include:
- First to receive comprehensive hospital operating license in Shanghai

Nearly a decade ago, with plans for the expansion into Pudong New Area becoming a reality, the local government realized that substantial improvements to infrastructure, including healthcare, would be needed to sustain future growth.
In 2001, the leadership of a newly-built hospital in Lujiazui, Pudong and Shanghai's soon-to-be commercial and financial hub, was introduced to several doctors and hospital administrators from the United States who were interested in making a difference in China. Out of this conversation came the idea of creating a Western-managed, international standard, comprehensive hospital that would the first of its kind in Shanghai.
Caring for people of all nationalities, Shanghai East International Medical Center opened its doors in 2003 and is a U.S.-China joint venture hospital founded by Shanghai East Hospital and U.S. Healthcare Management Enterprises, Inc., a California-based healthcare organization.
