¡°Baby Formula Scandal in China¡±

1. Sanlu Group tests confirmed the presence of melamine in baby milk powder as early as last month, just before the Olympics kicked off on August 8. 13,000 babies have already been affected.

2. Consumption of melamine has shown to cause kidney stones and acute renal failure. Four deaths so far have been attributed to this toxic chemical, with thousands still sick.

3. The milk powder is sold in China under the name Sanlu Bei Bei Infant Powder.

4. Bei Yin Mei's infant formula sold in China was declared melamine-free by authorities.

5. The contamination is not limited to powdered milk. More than 10 percent of liquid milk produced by China 's top manufacturers had been found to contain small amounts of melamine eg yoghurt and White Rabbit Creamy Candy.

6. Melamine, a chemical used in plastics and glue, is the chemical involved in a massive pet food recall last year. Melamine has no nutritional value but is high in nitrogen, making products with it appear higher in protein. Suppliers trying to cut costs are believed to have added the toxic chemical to watered-down milk to cover up the resulting protein deficiency.

7. La Leche League meetings in English will begin on October 11 th at SEIMC to promote breastfeeding and allow mothers to talk about any concerns they have regarding this subject.
